Plastic-Free Shopping: 7 Easy Tips for Beginners 🌿

⏱️ 3 Min.
Shopping with less (or no) plastic can feel like a real challenge. As soon as you step into a supermarket, you’re surrounded by packaging – it’s often harder than expected to avoid plastic or even reduce it. I’m still far from living zero waste or completely plastic-free (unfortunately). I’ve tried a lot of tips, failed plenty of times, but also found practical ways to make it easier to integrate into everyday life.In this article, I’m sharing my favorite tips for getting started 🫶

Why shop plastic-free?

Plastic is everywhere – in packaging, clothing, cosmetics, even in the water we drink. According to a WWF study, over 4.8 million tons of plastic end up in the oceans each year (source). A large portion of that comes from our daily habits – which means that’s where we can start making a difference.

  • Less waste at home and on the go
  • Less microplastic in the environment
  • More mindful consumption
  • Support for sustainable brands

How to get started step by step

1. Take stock 📝

What do you buy regularly? Where does most packaging pile up? Start where it’s easiest. For example, I used to buy liquid soap – now I simply use bar soap. It’s plastic-free and lasts so much longer.

2. Replace small habits

You don’t need to change everything at once – small shifts often make the biggest impact:

  • Reusable cotton bags instead of plastic ones
  • Loose fruits & veggies instead of packaged ones
  • Yogurt or beans in glass jars instead of plastic cups or cans
  • Bamboo toothbrush instead of plastic
  • Reusable containers instead of foil or single-use packaging

3. Plan your shopping 🛒

If you know what you need, you’ll shop more consciously and sustainably. I use an app (sometimes just paper) and plan ahead where I’ll buy what.

My favorite plastic-free shopping essentials

  • 🛍️ Cotton bags & mesh produce bags: For bread, fruits, veggies – easy to carry and reuse.
  • 🫙 Glass jars & containers: Perfect for bulk stores or farmers’ markets.
  • 🧺 Basket: My personal go-to for the market – stylish and practical.
  • 🧴 Refill bottles: For liquid soap, shampoo, or cleaning supplies from refill stations.
  • 🧂 Small cloth pouches: Great for dry goods like rice, nuts, or lentils.

Where to shop plastic-free

  • 🌾 Farmers’ markets: Fresh local produce, usually unpackaged – just bring your own bags.
  • 🛒 Bulk & zero waste stores: Fill your own jars and pouches. Many also offer refills for cleaning and beauty products.
  • 🧑‍🌾 Farm shops: Regional, seasonal, often package-free – especially for eggs, veggies & grains. We only buy eggs from local farms where chickens roam freely (you can even see them!). They often have crates to return empty cartons for reuse.
  • 🧼 Drugstores: Look for solid soaps, shampoo bars, and refill stations for cleaning supplies or conditioner.
  • 🛍️ Supermarkets with zero waste sections: Some chains now offer refill stations or sell unpackaged nuts, dried fruits & more.

7 everyday tips to make it work

  1. Stay flexible: If it doesn’t work out sometimes – that’s okay. It has to fit your life and be enjoyable, or you’ll give up quickly (which helps no one).
  2. Reduce instead of replace: You don’t need a plastic-free version of everything – sometimes it’s enough to skip it altogether.
  3. Organic ≠ plastic-free: Even organic items often come in plastic – look for glass or loose options.
  4. DIY more often: Dips, spreads, or cleaners are easy to make and reduce waste.
  5. Reuse & refill: Repurpose jars, bottles & containers – saves money and resources.
  6. Start the conversation: Ask stores politely if you can bring your own containers – many are open to it.
  7. Celebrate the wins: Every plastic-free purchase is a small win for the planet – be proud of your progress! ✨

Mini-Impulse: Less perfection, more awareness

“We don’t need a handful of people doing zero waste perfectly. We need millions doing it imperfectly.”

Conclusion: Your path to a more plastic-free life

Plastic-free shopping isn’t just a trend – it’s a mindful journey that brings you closer to yourself. You learn to consume consciously, appreciate what you have, and make gradual shifts that really add up.

I’m not perfect. And you don’t have to be either. But every reusable bag, every refill, every thoughtful purchase counts – for our planet. 🌍

FAQs on shopping plastic-free

1. Is plastic-free shopping more expensive?

Not necessarily. If you buy less but more mindfully and cook more at home, you often save money – especially long-term.

2. How do you transport fresh produce without plastic?

I use cotton bags for bread & veggies, glass jars for liquids, and always take a small cooler bag for sensitive items.

3. What if there’s no bulk store near me?

Farmers’ markets are a great alternative. You can also choose products in glass or paper – every small step counts.
